Four Gophers Score Double-Digits in Florida Gulf Coast Win

12/9/2023 1:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Joshua Ola-Joseph led short-handed Minnesota (7-3), tying his career-high with 17 points, and the Gophers used a 16-1 second-half run to pull away from Florida Gulf Coast (3-8) for a 77-57 victory at Williams Arena. Ola-Joseph made 5-of-9 field goals, including a career-best 3-of-4 from three-point range, and was 4-of-4 at the free throw line. He added four rebounds and an assist in 27 minutes.

Minnesota, playing without its injured leading scorer and rebounder Dawson Garcia, had four players reach double-figures in the win. Mike Mitchell Jr. came off the bench for 14 points, five assists, and four rebounds, Isaiah Ihnen finished with 13 points and five boards, Cam Christie added 11 points and six rebounds, and Elijah Hawkins just missed a second straight point-assist double-double with eight points and 11 assists.

Minnesota opened the game just 3-of-17 and trailed 14-5 with about 12 minutes left in the first half, but the Gophers responded by making five consecutive field goals to trim FGCU's advantage to 24-21 with 6:15 remaining. Two free throws from Ola-Joseph and a layup by Mitchell Jr. gave Minnesota a lead it would not relinquish, 25-24 at the 5:00 minute mark. After its sluggish start, Minnesota made 11-of-15 (.733) field goals, including 5-of-7 from three-point range, over the final 10:28 to take a 37-33 halftime lead. Ola-Joseph led the Gophers with 11 points at the break, while Ihnen had eight, and Christie added seven.

FGCU pulled to within two points, 43-41, with 14;32 left, but the Gophers went on a 16-1 run, keyed by a pair of three-pointers and eight points from Mitchell Jr., to stretch the lead to 17 points with 9:45 on the clock. The Gophers expanded the lead to as many as 27 points, 75-48, on a three-pointer from Hawkins with 4:16 remaining and wound up with the 20-point victory.

The Gophers made 31-of-68 (.456) field goals, including 10-of-28 (.357) treys, and were 5-of-5 at the line. Minnesota had a 38-32 rebounding advantage and was credited with 23 assists on 31 made field goals.

Minnesota continues its five-game homestand when it plays host to IUPUI on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7:00 p.m. CDT on Big Ten Plus.
