Gophers Fall 5-1 to Badgers, Split Border Battle Series
12/9/2023 5:01:00 PM | Women's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's hockey team lost to the Wisconsin Badgers by a score of 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Badger offense picked up steam in the second and third periods, scoring all five of its goals in the final 40 minutes of game action. Lacey Eden scored twice for Wisconsin, while Kristen Simms scored once and added one assist.
Junior Skylar Vetter started between the pipes for the Maroon and Gold, finishing with 36 saves in the game.
Both teams were held scoreless in the opening frame, with a tightly-contested period featuring 13 Badger shots on net and 12 Gopher shots saved. Each team had powerplay opportunities – as six penalties were called in the period – but neither team capitalized.
Sophomore Josefin Bouveng scored the lone Gopher goal, executing a two-on-one play by firing a shot to the top left corner for her fifth goal of the season. The Badgers scored a short-handed goal just over halfway through the second period to even the score at one. They then took advantage of a powerplay opportunity roughly four minutes later, taking the lead.
Wisconsin found the back of the net three more times in the final frame while holding Minnesota scoreless, leading to a score of 5-1 at the final buzzer.
Quotable
"Obviously not the way we wanted to end the first half of the season, but still really proud of our team," head coach Brad Frost said. "As you look at the last several months it's been pretty special seeing our team come together, seeing them continue to improve and get better. We're looking forward to the break we have here, but all in all, really proud of this group."
Notable
- Josefin Bouveng's point streak reaches nine games
- Saturday marks just the fifth time this season Minnesota has allowed more than one goal
- Gophers now 4-4-2 against Badgers in last 10 matchups
Up Next
After the break, the Gophers will face off with Connecticut for games on Jan. 5 and Jan 6 at Ridder Arena.
