MINNEAPOLIS – For his performance in last week's tri-dual sweep for Minnesota, Gophers sophomore Bar Soloveychik has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the first time in his career, the conference announced Wednesday.

Soloveychik won three races, two individually, and set a school record as the Gophers went 2-0 against Northwestern and Purdue.

A native of Kiryat Motzkin, Israel, Soloveychik took down the oldest record on the Minnesota men's side when he swam the 1000 free in a time of 8:54.69, shaving over a second off the previous mark of 8:56.27 set by Justin Mortimer in 2001. It was also the fastest time in the 36-year history of the Wildcats' Norris Aquatics Center.

Soloveychik now owns individual school records in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free and 400m free. He's also part of the 800 free relay record set in early December at the Minnesota Invite.

His triumph in the 1000 free was one of two victories on the evening for Soloveychik. He was also part of the winning 800 free relay team (6:25.80). Saturday, Soloveychik notched his second individual win of the weekend when he finished first in the 500 free with a 'B' cut of 4:19.43.

He logged an additional 'B' cut on the weekend with a of 1:36.89 in a third-place finish in the 200 free. He also was part of the 400 free relay that came in second at 2:55.17, swimming the anchor leg in a split of 44.29.

Soloveychik is the first Gopher to be named Men's Big Ten Swimmer of the Week this season. The last to do it was Max McHugh on Feb. 2, 2022. In fact, McHugh had won the previous seven such honors, making Soloveychik the first Gopher other than McHugh to win the award since Bowe Becker on Feb. 6, 2019.

Earlier this year, Drew Bennett was named Big Ten Diver of the Week and Alberto Hernandez the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Dec. 7, while Bennett captured both of those honors himself on Jan. 11.

The Golden Gophers have one more home meet before the Big Ten Championship season as they host their First Chance Meet this weekend. Friday's competition starts at 6 p.m., while sessions Saturday start at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
