Taylor Heise scored a pair of goals in the 7-5 defeat.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3 Gopher Women's hockey team suffered its second loss on home ice this season against the No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin secured the extra conference point in the shootout.
After a defensive start to the game, it was Taylor Heise who opened the scoring with her 22nd goal and fourth shorthanded goal of the year. Minnesota (23-4-3) added to its lead early in the third period after Catie Skaja found the back of the net on the power play for her ninth goal of the season. Wisconsin (22-8-2) responded with three goals from Claire Enright, Laila Edwards and Kirsten Simms to take a 3-2 lead into the third period.
After Simms doubled the Badgers lead with her second goal of the game, the Gophers tied the game with two third period goals from Abbey Murphy and Taylor Heise again. Wisconsin regained their two goal cushion before securing the victory with an empty-net goal. Grace Zumwinkle scored her 106th career goal with 57 seconds left.
Skylar Vetter made 29 saves in her fifth loss of the season. Her record is now 20-5-3. Wisconsin's Cami Kronish made 40-of-45 saves in the victory.
Quotable
"A frustrating result," said head coach Brad Frost. "Certainly not the outcome we were hoping for. We're proud of our team for coming back from a couple of goals down and having 26 shots in the third period. We had to press a bit and it led to a couple of odd-man rushes for them. Still a lot of hockey left and we'll regroup and be back at it next week."
Notable
• Tonight's attendance was 3,539, setting a new single series attendance record at Ridder Arena with 7,078.
• Heise moves into sole possession of fourth place in program history in shorthanded goals (9).
• The Gophers suffer their first loss this season when leading after the first period (18-1-2)
Up Next
The Gophers and Tommies will wrap up the regular season next weekend (Feb. 17-18) at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
