Murphy’s OT Winner Pushes the Gophers Past the Tommies
2/17/2023 9:45:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Minnesota will close out the regular season tomorrow night at 6:00 pm CT.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The No. 4 Gopher Women's hockey team got back in the win column after a 2-1 overtime win over St. Thomas on Friday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena.
Minnesota (24-5-3) and St. Thomas (8-24-1) battled for two periods without either side finding the game's opening goal. The Tommies opened the scoring with an early third-period goal from Nicole Vallario – her first of the season. The lead didn't last long as Taylor Heise scored her 24th goal of the season just 57 seconds later to even the contest. Neither team could find a winner in regulation, bringing the Gophers to their second overtime over the last three games. Just under halfway through the overtime frame, Abbey Murphy scored her 23rd goal of the season to give Minnesota its seventh-straight road victory.
Skylar Vetter picked up her 21st win of the season behind 18 saves. St. Thomas' Saskia Maurer was stellar, stopping 53 shots in the defeat.
Quotable
"A hard-fought win in overtime tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "We had over 50 shots and hit a few posts and crossbars, but we just didn't have the puck luck that we wanted. We defended pretty well and had to come back from being down in the third. We did a nice job of that and were able to get the winner in OT."
Notable
• With a third-period assist, Grace Zumwinkle becomes the 10th player in program history to record 200 career points.
• Minnesota improves to 9-0-0 in the all-time series.
• Skylar Vetter moves into a tie for 10th place in program history in career wins (27).
