Gophers Reach Podium Twice on Opening Night of Big Tens

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota opened the 2023 Big Ten Championships with a pair of podium finishes as events got underway Wednesday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The evening started for Minnesota with the 200 medley relay as the Golden Gophers posted an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:39.37. Freshman Ava Yablonski opened with a 50-yard split of 24.66 in the backstroke, while senior Emma Lezer followed in the breaststroke with a 27.67 split. Fellow senior Jordan McGinty was next in the 50 fly at 24.57, while fifth-year senior captain Olivia Bloomer anchored the freestyle in 22.47.
The Gophers improved their positioning by one spot in the next race as they came in seventh in the 800 free relay. Fifth-year senior Kate Sullivan led off in 1:48.55, and was followed by sophomore Hannah Cornish (1:48.05), junior Megan Van Berkom (1:46.16) and senior Maggie Summit (1:48.07).
With 90 points through two events, Minnesota is tied for seventh place with Rutgers. Indiana holds a two-point edge of 118-116 over Ohio State for first place, while host-Michigan is third with 112 points.
Thursday's schedule includes the prelims of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 1-meter diving, plus the 400 medley relay in the evening session.
