Young has been honored by the conference three times this indoor season.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota track and field graduate student Amira Young has been honored by the Big Ten as the Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Last weekend Young won the Windy City Invite 60m and 200m. Her 7.19 winning 60m time is both a program and Big Ten record. The program record was a 21-year old record and the Big Ten record had stood since 2003 (Rachelle Boone, Indiana in 7.21). Young edged teammate Akilah Lewis (7.21) in the same 60m race to claim the event title. Young's 7.19 is ranked No. 10 in the NCAA this season. The Chicago, Ill., native also posted a winning 200m time of 23.53, which is the No. 1 Big Ten time this season. Young is the leader of the Gophers' 60m group that is ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten on the USTFCCCA 60m 'Event Squad' Rankings and is No. 5 in the nation as of Feb. 15.
Young has now been honored four times during her career in the Twin Cities. She was honored once before in the 2021 indoor season.
Minnesota has just one home event, the Snowshoe Open, before the team travels to Geneva, Ohio, for the 2023 Big Ten Indoor Championships from Feb. 24-25.
