•  The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is back in action for the third time in five days when it plays at Maryland, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. CT. Minnesota is in the midst of four games in a week, three of which are on the road. The Feb 20 game vs. Illinois was rescheduled due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols originally scheduled for Feb. 7. Following the Maryland game, Minnesota is on the road for the third-straight game when it travels to Nebraska, Saturday. Â
•  Minnesota fell to Illinois 69-78 on Monday in Champaign, Ill. Jamison Battle led Minnesota with a season-high 31 points, while Dawson Garcia had 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Joshua Ola-Joseph added 11 points at State Farm Center.
•  Jamison Battle added 31 points against Illinois Monday, his second 30-point production game of his Gopher career. In fact, Battle scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half of the Illinois game. The last time a Gopher player had 20 points in a half was also Battle when he had 21 against Michigan on Dec. 11, 2021. The last time  Battle scored 30+ points was the last time he visited the Xfinity Center on March 2, 2022. Battle posted a career-best 39 points at Maryland when he went 14-31 and had seven threes, all career bests. Battle has had five 20-plus point games this season and scored double figures now in 42 games as a Gopher and 14 this season. Â
•  Joshua Ola-Joseph has scored 11 points in three-straight games for the Gophers and four in the last five games. The rookie has now had 10 games in which he's scored double-figure games. Â
•  With the exception of losing Parker Fox and Isaiah Ihnen to season-ending injuries earlier this year, Minnesota was back at full strength for the first time since Jan. 19 when Dawson Garcia and Braeden Carrington returned to action during the Penn State game. Carrington missed seven games due to a stress reaction in his right leg. Garcia suffered a bone bruise in the second half at Michigan (Jan. 22) and was sidelined for five games. Garcia returned to the starting lineup and scored 23 points against the Nittany Lions and seven rebounds. It marked his 16th double-figure scoring game of his Gopher career and fourth with 20+ points. Carrington returned for limited minutes on Saturday where he played seven minutes. Both saw significant time in the game at Illinois as well.Â
ABOUT MARYLAND
• Maryland holds an 18-9 overall record and 9-7 within Big Ten play under Kevin Willard, who is in his first year at the helm of Terrapin men's basketball. Willard was previously at Seton Hall for 12 years. Although the Terps lost their last game at Nebraska, 70-66 in overtime Sunday, Maryland has won the last 2-of-3, with home wins over Penn State and Purdue.Â
• Jahmir Young leads the team averaging 16.3 points per game, 91 assists and 35 steals. He's led the team in scoring in 12 of the Terps' 16 Big Ten games. Young also  ranks ninth in league scoring. Hakim Hart averages 11.8 ppg, while Donta Scott is at 11.5. Rounding out Maryland's double-figure scoring is Julian Reese, who averages 10.8 ppg and a team-best 6.9 rebounds per game.Â
• As a team, Maryland averages 70.5 ppg, while allowing 62.7. They are shooting 44.5 percent and 30.7 from beyond the arc. The Terps are also shooting 74.1 percent from the charity stripe and average 34.9 rebounds per game.Â
THE LAST TIME
• Minnesota and Maryland tangled earlier this month and just three games ago for the Gophers, including two postponements following. The Gophers and Terps met earlier this year at Williams Arena on Feb. 4. Following that game, Minnesota briefly went on a COVID-19 pause.Â
• Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with 14 points and added six rebounds and three blocked shots, Jaden Henley added eight points and a career-high seven rebounds, but Maryland posted a 81-46 win. Minnesota was limited to eight players in the game, as the Gophers were without leading scorer and rebounder Dawson Garcia and guard Braeden Carrington.
POSTPONEMENT GAMES
• The Minnesota men's basketball game originally scheduled for Feb. 7 at Illinois, was played on Monday, Feb. 20 in Champaign, Ill. The game was postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the Golden Gopher program.Â
• Michigan State announced on Monday, Feb. 13 that the men's basketball game between Minnesota and Michigan State, which was to be contested on Wednesday, Feb 15 at Michigan State, was postponed because of the tragic shootings that took place on the Michigan State campus on Monday. Any information regarding rescheduling would be announced at a later date.
