Gophers Fall at Maryland
2/22/2023 9:04:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with 17 points, Dawson Garcia had 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Jaden Henley added 14 points, but RV/RV Maryland (19-9, 10-7 B1G) used a 25-4 spurt in the first half to key an 88-70 win over the Gophers Wednesday night at Xfinity Center. It was Minnesota's second road game in three days.
Minnesota made 3-of-5 (.600) from three-point range in the first half and finished the game at 7-of-10, which ranks fourth in school history and is the best effort since making 11-of-15 (733) versus Franklin Pierce on Nov. 20, 2014. Henley had a career-high three steals and reached double-figures in the scoring column for the third time this season and the second time in the past four games. Payne was 7-of-11 from the field, scoring 13 points in the second half, and finishing with 17 points in 17 minutes
Minnesota led 11-8 at the first media timeout behind five points from Garcia and four from Henley. After a layup from Garcia put the Gophers up 13-8, Maryland scored five straight to tie the score. Still tied, 20-20, the Terps broke things open with a 15-0 run in just over three minutes before a three-pointer from Henley snapped the run. The Terps, who were 19-of-26 (.731) from the field in the first half used another 8-0 run to stretch the lead to 21 before a buzzer-beating three from Henley sent the teams to the locker room with Maryland holding a 47-30 lead. Garcia led the Gophers with 13 points and four boards at the break, while Henley was 2-of-2 from long-distance and had 10 points.
After going scoreless in the first half, Jamison Battle opened the second with a trey from the top of the key, and Joshua Ola-Joseph also knocked one down to make the Gophers 5-of-7 from distance. But Maryland also started hot by making 3-of-4 from three-point range to open the half and the Terps maintained the lead the rest of the way.
Minnesota wraps up the week with its third road game in five days when it faces Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 2:30 p.m. CDT on BTN.
