Gophers Drop Contest to Nebraska

2/25/2023 5:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Five Minnesota players scored in double-figures, led by 12 points each from Jamison Battle and Ta'Lon Cooper, and Dawson Garcia had a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 14 rebounds, but Nebraska held off the Gophers to record a 78-67 win Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Jaden Henley finished with 11 points, and Pharrel Payne had 10 points and nine rebounds to just miss a double-double. It was Minnesota's third road game in five days.

Nebraska opened the game by making 12 of its first 17 field goal attempts, including a stretch where it went 9-of-10, as it built a 27-16 lead. Minnesota was just 12-of-33 (.364) in the opening 20 minutes, but closed the half on a 5-2 run to head to the locker room trailing 37-27. Payne led the Gophers by going 4-of-4 from the field for eight points to go with six rebounds, while Garcia topped the team with eight boards in the first half and added six points, and Battle knocked down two treys.

Garcia opened the scoring for the Gophers in the second half with a three-point play and Joshua Ola-Joseph hit a couple shots to cut the deficit to 40-34 with 16:12 left. The Huskers scored six straight to stretch the lead to 14 at 52-38, but the Gophers responded with three-pointers from Battle, Cooper, and Braeden Carrington in just over a minute to cut it to 54-47. Henley added another three and Minnesota was back within six, 58-52, with 7:28 remaining. Nebraska pushed the lead back to ten points, and the Gophers weren't able to get it closer than seven points the rest of the game.

After three-straight road games this week, Minnesota is scheduled to wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games, first facing Rutgers on Thursday, March 2, at 6:00 p.m. CDT on FS1.
