Minnesota Stays Unbeaten at Ridder, Takes Down No. 1 Ohio State on Friday

2/3/2023 10:19:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Abbey Murphy scored a pair of goals in the Gophers’ 13th straight win.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3 Gopher Women's hockey team skated to a 4-2 win over the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes at Ridder Arena on Friday evening.

After skating evenly with the Buckeyes for the first 14 minutes of play, Peyton Hemp broke the tie and gave Minnesota (23-3-2) a 1-0 lead off a pass from Josefin Bouveng. Less than a minute into the second period, Abigail Boreen found the back of the net to extend the Gophers' lead over Ohio State (24-3-2) to 2-0.

Minnesota took a 3-0 lead on a power-play opportunity midway through the second when Abby Murphy scored her 19th goal of the season. Taylor Heise assisted on both Boreen and Murphy's goals.

The Buckeyes started their comeback attempt when Gabby Rosenthal pounced on a loose puck with eight minutes left in the second period. Jenn Gardiner then scored 16 seconds into the third period on a power play to cut the Buckeyes' deficit to just one. The Gophers held onto a one-goal lead until Murphy put the game away with her second goal of the night with just over five minutes to play.

Skylar Vetter, the reigning WCHA Goaltender of the Month, won her 12th straight game behind 31 saves. Raygan Kirk started in goal for the Buckeyes, stopping 23 shots in the loss.

Quotable
"The first five minutes we were reactive and they were dictating play," said head coach Brad Frost. "We got a power play a few minutes in and got some momentum off of that. I felt like after that we were settled in. You certainly don't want to give one up 16 seconds into the third and for the next ten minutes it was 'bend, but don't break'. A lot of big blocks. A lot of big saves. You need all of those things until Murphy got us that two-goal cushion and I thought we were fine after that."

Notable
•    Minnesota's win streak reaches 13 games while improving to 13-0-0 on home ice this season.
•    With three assists on the night, Heise has reached the 50-point mark for the second consecutive season.
•    Both Murphy and Boreen have each scored in four of the Gophers' last five games.
•    The Gophers are now 21-0-1 when scoring first and 20-0-2 when leading after two periods this season.
