Gophers, Buckeyes Settle for Weekend Split
2/4/2023 6:04:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Minnesota suffers its first defeat since Nov. 26.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3 Gopher Women's hockey team's win streak came to an end at 13 games after a 5-1 defeat at the hands of No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.
Â
For the 14th straight game, Minnesota (23-4-2) found the back of the net first thanks to a point shot from Madeline Wethington for her second goal of the season. Ohio State (25-3-2) responded with two goals in 19 seconds from Sloane Matthews and Hadley Hartmetz to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 15-6 in the second period but couldn't find the equalizer. Abigail Boreen hit the post twice in the period. For the second-straight game, the visitors found the back of the net within the first 30 seconds of the third period after Gabby Rosenthal put home a rebound to extend Minnesota's deficit to two goals. Ohio State added two more goals later in the third period to secure the victory.
Skylar Vetter made 27 saves in her first defeat since Nov. 26. Her record is now 20-4-2 on the season. Ohio State's Amanda Thiele stopped 32 shots in the victory.
Quotable
"Obviously not the result we wanted today," said head coach Brad Frost. "I thought it was a really good hockey game. Ohio State took it to us there in the first period, but we had a great pace to the second with several 'Grade A' opportunities. They stayed out unfortunately and they were able to extend their lead in the third. I still like the way we played and everything we want is still in front of us and we're excited about that."

• Minnesota suffers its first defeat on home ice this season (13-1-0).
• After splitting this weekend's series, the Gophers lead the WCHA by two points.
• Today marked Minnesota's first defeat when scoring first this season (21-1-1).
