Gophers travel to Fargo for regional

MINNEAPOLIS - The top-ranked Minnesota men's hockey team enters the 2023 NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and will travel to Fargo, N.D., for the NCAA Fargo Regional. The Golden Gophers face No. 4-seed Canisius Thursday, March 23 inside Scheels Arena at 8 p.m. live on ESPN2 and the Gopher Radio Network 103.5 FM/AM-1130 KTLK. The rest of the bracket features a full State of Hockey flavor with No. 2 St. Cloud State and No. 3 Minnesota State to open the action at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Maroon and Gold (26-9-1 overall) is making its NCAA-record 40th all-time appearance at the postseason event and led by scorers Logan Cooley (52 points) and Jimmy Snuggerud (49 points), while Cooley is joined by linemate and Big Ten Conference Player of the Year Matthew Knies (41 points) as top 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Brock Faber, the B1G Defensive Player of the Year, anchors one of the nation's best groups along the blue line as the Gophers own the second-best scoring margin in the nation at +1.8.

Minnesota won its sixth B1G regular season championship during the 2022-23 campaign and did so in record-setting fashion. It won its 29th regular season crown with 19 wins and 57 points, the most ever for a B1G team in the league's 10-year history.

The Gophers made their 22nd trip to the NCAA Frozen Four a season ago after winning twice at the NCAA Northeast Regional over 2021 national champion Massachusetts and top-seed Western Michigan. The victory against the Broncos was the 58th NCAA tournament win in program history, which is the most in college hockey history.
