MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota junior William Christenson has been named a member of the 2022-23 College Sports Communicators Academic All-America men's swimming third team, the CSC announced Tuesday. The team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Christenson had the top time on the team this year in the 400 IM, ultimately reaching the podium at the Big Ten Championships with an eighth-place finish.

He posted four individual wins on the year, taking the 1000 free and 200 IM in a dual against South Dakota, the 100 fly in a tri-dual with St. Thomas and South Dakota State and the 400 IM in a Big Ten tri-dual versus Northwestern and Purdue.

A native of Olympia, Wash., Christenson posted 10 NCAA provisional cuts this year across four events, including five alone in the 400 IM. On the pre-psych sheets for the NCAA Championships, he ranked 56th nationally in the 400 IM, 66th in the 1650 free and 108th in the 500 free.

Christenson, who holds a 3.90 GPA and is majoring in biomedical engineering, ranks fifth in team history for the 400 IM (3:46.08), 10th for the 1000 free (9:06.83) and 12th for the 1650 free (15:08.92).

Each Academic All-American was previously named an All-District honoree. To be considered for a CSC Academic All-District Team, nominees must have met the following criteria:
• Nominated athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.
• Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
• No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and been on a college roster in that sport for two years.
• In the cases of transfers, graduate students, and two-year college graduates, the student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible. Nominees in graduate school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above both as an undergrad and in grad school.

The 2022-23 season marks the first season that swimming and diving has its own Academic All-America teams as it was previously part of the CSC's At-Large team. Christenson is the first member of the Minnesota men's swimming and diving team to be named Academic All-American since Igor Cerensek in 2007, and he is the 10th honoree overall in program history.
