Richie Holetz went 6.0 innings, striking out two
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota fell in the final game of the Cambria College Classic on Sunday night to No. 7 Vanderbilt, 4-0. Four Commodores pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter on the night.
Senior Richie Holetz (0-1) got the ball to start for Minnesota (0-11) and took the loss despite pitching admirably, striking out two and allowing just three runs in a season-best 6.0 innings.
The Gophers walked six times on the day and were hit by a pitch once. Freshman Kris Hokenson led the team with three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Vanderbilt went up 2-0 in the first inning after a pair of hits, a walk and a Minnesota error. A sacrifice fly brought home run number two. The Dores added on one more in the second on an RBI single and another in the seventh on an RBI double.
Minnesota went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and had men reach third base several times, but failed to get on the board for the second time this season.
GAME NOTES
» Minnesota pitchers limited Vanderbilt to just 2-for-14 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 44 Vanderbilt hitters in the game, allowing 15 ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out three.
» The Golden Gophers drew six walks from Vanderbilt pitching.
» Vanderbilt was led offensively by freshman RJ Austin, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
» Senior Sam Hliboki led the Commodores pitching staff, throwing 3.2 shutout innings, striking out eight.
