Minnesota Set to Host Gopher Indoor Classic

MINNEAPOLIS – For the first time in program history, the Golden Gopher softball team hosts the Gopher Indoor Classic at U.S. Bank Stadium. NDSU, Drake, Central Michigan, Idaho State, and St. Thomas will all compete in 15 games through three days.
Scouting NDSU
NDSU improved its record last weekend with three-straight wins over SIU Edwardsville, Memphis, and UTSA in the Blues City Classic. 9-9 overall, the Bison kicked off their season at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, facing three ranked opponents.
NDSU is led offensively by Carley Goetschius and Paige Vargas in the circle, who won Summit League Pitcher of the Week back in February.
Scouting CMU
7-8 to begin the season, Central Michigan will start off the Gopher Indoor Classic facing St. Thomas on Friday. Junior Kelsey Alexander picked up Mid-America Conference Player of the Week honors after an elite individual performance at The Spring Games last weekend.
Alexander homered in the Chippewas first three games, totaling five on the year. Alexander's efforts contributed to their 3-2 Spring Games record.
Scouting Idaho State
The Golden Gophers will face the Bengals for the first time since 2017. Minnesota leads the series 4-0, as they have outscored Idaho 34-12 through four meetings. The first contest between the two teams date back to 2007, competing in Sacramento, California.
Scouting Drake
Despite a 4-10 record, the Bulldogs have held their own against top opponents this season. At the Razorback Invitational they faced No. 19 Arizona and No. 8 Arkansas. Notably, the Bulldogs fell to the Razorbacks 4-3 through 11 innings.
Scouting St. Thomas
With a 6-9 record, the University of St. Thomas Tommies will compete against Central Michigan to start their Gopher Indoor Classic Slate. The Gophers will close out the tournament against the Tommies on Sunday night.
Junior first baseman, Katie Goelz, picked up Summit League Softball Performer of the Week honors back in February following her performance at the Evansville Invite. Goelz noted eight hits, one double, two home runs, five runs, six RBI, four stolen bases and 40 putouts through five games.

Duck, Duck, Gray Duck
The Gophers kept the 20th-ranked Ducks to one run and two hits on Friday in a dominant 4-1 win. Fifth year senior Autumn Pease collected her fifth (and second) ranked win of 2023 while freshman Addison Leschber had two home runs. Freshman Breezy Burnett also noted her first career home run and two RBI, as Krapf scored.
The Pease Knees
Noting a new career-high of 11 innings pitched against Cal State Fullerton, Pease struck out 14 batters allowing no earned runs on six hits and two walks. After taking the lead against the Titans, Minnesota fell behind by one run, eventually taking the win with three runs in the top of the 11th. Pease retired all three batters to end the game on Saturday night.
Fierce Freshman
Leschber and Burnett stepped up over the weekend with a combined three home runs, four runs, and eight hits. Leschber noted five starts while Burnett had four and appeared in all five games for Minnesota.
Up Next
The Golden Gophers will travel to Wichita Kansas to participate in the Wichita State Tournament in one last nonconference tournament. Minnesota begins Big Ten play in Evanston, Ill., March 24-26 against No. 22/24 Northwestern.
