Gophers Tied for Ninth After Opening Round of Big Ten Championship

Isabella McCauley leads the team individually T-7
PITTSBURGH, PA. - The University of Minnesota women's golf team began post-season play at the Big Ten Championship today. The Gophers finished round one tied for ninth shooting 301 (+17). Freshman Isabella McCauley posted a team-best 71 (E) and finished the day in the top 10.
The course was proven to be challenging as no team scored under par. Illinois holds the lead with a two-over-par 286, followed by Ohio State (292) and Maryland (294).

"We clearly did not have our best today but what we do next is what matters most. As the overall scores show, the course played difficult as it should for a championship," said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "We know we need to be more disciplined tomorrow and make choices off the tee that will set us up for success. We still control our own destiny and I trust this team to navigate tomorrow's rounds with calmness and clarity."
Notable:
Isabella McCauley started off hot with six pars and three birdies on the front. She finished her day tied for seventh carding an even-par 71 and just two shots off the lead.
Grace Curran notched 10 pars alongside two birdies on her way to shooting a 76 (+5). The senior is currently tied for 33rd heading into round two.
Leah Herzog finished her day with five straight pars today. The senior's 6-over-par 77 has her tied for 43rd.
Freshman Luisamariana Mesones sits alongside teammate Herzog in a tie for 43rd. She rolled home three birdies on the front and eight total pars shooting 77 (+6).
Junrui Chi carded seven pars and two birdies in round one. Her score of 80 (+9) has her tied for 73rd.
Emma Carpenter improved by four shots between nines today. The senior penciled in an 83 (+12) and is tied for 78th.

Round two of the Big Ten Championship will begin tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 22. Carpenter will tee off with the first group at 7:30 a.m. CT with nine-minute increments between Gophers.
