Three first-team selections for 'U'
TAMPA - Three members of the No. 1 Minnesota men's hockey team earned 2022-2023 AHCA/CCM Hockey Men's Division I All-American West First Team status it was announced Friday with Logan Cooley, Brock Faber and Matthew Knies picking up the distinction.
Â
The three first-team selections were the most of any team in the country this year and the third-consecutive year where at least one Golden Gopher earned All-American honors. It's only the second time in program history with three representatives from the Maroon and Gold on the first team after it happened last in 1954 with Dick Dougherty, John Mayasich and Ken Yackel, Sr., while it's the fourth time with three All-Americans in the same year (2021, 2014, 1996).
Â
The trio helped Minnesota to their second-straight and 23rd all-time appearance at the NCAA Frozen Four following a record-breaking regular season where they won a Big Ten Conference championship. They skate for the sixth national championship in Gopher men's hockey history Saturday night against Quinnipiac.
Â
Cooley put together one of the most impressive rookie seasons in program history and is the first freshman since Jim Mattson in 1953 to earn All-American honors. A 2023 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Hat Trick Finalist, he paces the Maroon and Gold with 60 points, the fifth-most points by a rookie in single-season history at Minnesota, thanks to an NCAA-best 38 assists. The Pittsburgh, Pa., product was an All-Big Ten First Team and All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection before earning a spot on the B1G All-Tournament Team and NCAA Fargo Regional All-Tournament Team during the postseason.
Â
Faber made it back-to-back seasons as the Big Ten Conference's Defensive Player of the Year and the team captain was nothing short of brilliant all season for the Gophers. Already known as a shut-down defenseman, the Maple Grove, Minn., native added to his repertoire this year by tallying career highs in goals (4), assists (22) and points (26), including a pair of three-point performances. The junior is one of just two Minnesota players to be named to the All-B1G First Team multiple times in a career (2022 and 2023) and was named to the honorable mention team as a freshman in 2021.
Â
Knies was a Hobey Baker Memorial Award Hat Trick Finalist and the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year in 2022-23 showcasing his 200-foot game on the ice. The sophomore has recorded a career-best 42 points via 21 goals and 21 assists, including an NCAA-best seven game-winning goals, three of which came in overtime. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., he is second on the team lead with 21 goals and Minnesota owns a 17-2-0 record when Knies had a goal this year. He also recorded 12 multi-point games with four, three-point efforts for the Gophers.
Â
Minnesota plays for the final time in 2022-23 Saturday night in the NCAA Championship. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. (CT) live on ESPN2 and the Gopher Radio Network.
