MINNEAPOLIS – A trio of Minnesota swimmers has been selected to represent the United States at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China, the United States International University Sports Federation has announced.

Rising seniors Megan Van Berkom, William Christenson and Chris Nagy were all chosen to compete at the international competition. The swimming events will be held August 1-7, while the Games themselves open on July 28 and close August 8. The Chengdu Games were originally set to be held in 2021 but were postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.

Van Berkom is coming off a 2022-23 campaign where she earned First-Team All-America honors in the 400 IM, placing sixth at the NCAA Championships. She was also a Second-Team All-Big Ten honoree after earning a silver medal in the 400 IM at Big Tens and bronze in the 200 IM and 200 fly. She owns school records in each of the latter two events.

Nagy qualified for the NCAA Championships this past season in both the 1650 free and 500 free and, in the former event, he placed fourth at the Big Ten Championships. A CSC Academic All-District and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Nagy ranks fifth in team history for the 1000 free and 1650 free, and ninth for the 500 free.

Christenson earned a spot on the podium at the 2023 Big Ten Championships in the 400 IM, finishing eighth. He was chosen as a CSC Third Team Academic All-American this year and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree. In his career, Christenson ranks fifth in team history for the 400 IM, 10th for the 1000 free and 12th for the 1650 free.
