MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota capped off the 2023 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday with three more conference titles to add to their two they earned on Friday and Saturday. The men's team finish is the highest for the program since 2013 and the 122 points are the most by the team at the conference meet since 2011 (123). The 'U' won a total of five Big Ten titles during the meet, the most since the team won six in 2002 and Minnesota's four individual BIg Ten titles are the most for the program in one conference meet since 2008 (four).
It was Matthew Wilkinson who stole the show at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex with his second Big Ten title at the 2023 Big Ten Championships. The returning First Team All-American won the 3000m steeplechase on Saturday and then returned on Sunday to double in the 5000m and claimed that title as well. Wilkinson became the first Gopher in program history to win both events at the same Big Ten Championships and is the first 5000m champion since Hassan Mead in 2009.
The 4x100m relay team started the meet off with a bang in the first event on the track. The team of Carlon Hosten, Kion Benjamin, Finn Schirmer and Devin Augustine broke a Big Ten Championship meet record to claim the crown. The time of 38.87 goes down as the fourth-fastest time by any Big Ten team in history and gave the Golden Gophers their first 4x100m relay title since 2002 and their third in program history.
The 'U' snagged another Big Ten crown in the 100m with Benjamin earning his second title in the event in his impressive career in the Twin Cities. The senior dropped a 10.18 in the final to edge Lawrence Johnson of Wisconsin (10.212) and teammate Carlon Hosten (10.219). Augustine was also in the Big Ten 100m final and finished seventh in a time of 10.35.
Minnesota earned a trio of silver medals on Sunday with the women earning three with Hosten earning his second medal of the afternoon in the 200m. Nyalaam Jok, the women's 4x100m relay and Amira Young all earned silver medals on the women's side on Sunday. Amira Young's Sunday will go down as one of the best in program history with the graduate student breaking three school records in one day. Her first came in the 4x100m relay with the Gophers earning a runner-up finish for the third straight year in a time of 43.83 with Odell Frye, Lauren Hansen and Akilah Lewis all a part of the silver medal finish. Young then got a chance to shine in the 100m, running a wind-legal time of 11.19 to finish second overall and her 23.09 in the 200m was good enough for third place.
For the second straight year Nyalaam Jok earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors with a clearance of 1.81m. The sophomore was clean through her first four heights and was in a tie for first before eventual champion Jenna Rogers cleared 1.84m to secure the title.

The sixth-year Gopher launched a mark of 56.55m to finish third overall while teammate Jake Kubiatowicz earned a fifth-place finish for Minnesota after earning a bronze medal of his own on Friday in the men's hammer throw.
Minnesota had a trio of events finish just shy of earning medals at the conference meet with Michael Buchanan (110m hurdles), Akilah Lewis (100m) and the men's 4x400m relay all finishing in fourth in Bloomington. For Lewis her new wind-legal personal best was clocked in the 100m at 11.28. For Buchanan his 13.82 was just shy of his school record time of 13.69 he set in the preliminary round on Saturday. The men's 4x400m relay team ran to a season-best time of 3:06.93 and in doing so clinched Minnesota's runner-up finish on the men's side of the team standings, edging out Iowa despite the Hawkeyes claiming the 4x400m relay title. The team of Hosten, freshman Ramy Ayoub, Jaydon Antoine and Augustine gutted out the performance with Antoine and Augustine dropping back-to-back 46-second splits to bring the Maroon and Gold back from the No. 6 position to the No. 4 position and just 0.03 behind a third-place finish.
Minnesota's women also got scoring performances from Maja Maunsbach and Zariyah Black in the 100m hurdles along with the 4x400m relay team.
