Warian Holds Top-Five Spot After Day One of NCAA Regionals

MINNEAPOLIS - In his first career appearance in the NCAA Regionals, junior Ben Warian carded a four-under 67, putting him in a tie for fifth -place overall after one round of the Bath Regional in Bath, Mich., on Monday. 

Warian's first round score of 68 puts him in a tie with six other golfers and just two shots back of the leader. Warian and Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen are tied for the top individual spot among those not on the top five teams on the leaderboard. 

The low five teams and low individual not on those five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26-31. 

Georgia is the leading team after the first round with a score of 18-under par, and the Bulldogs' own Ben Van Wyk is the low individual with a score of six-under 65. 

Warian finished both the front and back nine at two-under par, tallying just one bogey and five birdies overall. He closed out his first nine holes with a birdie on the par-four ninth. 

He started his back nine off strong, birdying the first par- three of the final nine holes. Warian finished his round with a bogey at the 17th, but bounced right back with a birdie on the par-five 18th. 

Warian will begin his second round of the Bath Regional on hole number 1 at 9:34 a.m. CT Tuesday.
