Gophers Win Final Mid-Week vs. SDSU, 9-6

5/16/2023 9:03:00 PM | Baseball

Minnesota scored eight runs in the first inning

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers took down South Dakota State, 9-6, in their final mid-week game of 2023.

Redshirt senior right-hander Ben Shepard went 4.1 innings, striking four three and allowing six runs (three earned). Freshman right-hander Caden Capomaccio (1-3) entered in relief, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and no runs, picking up his first collegiate win.

The Gophers got multi-hit outings from Brett Bateman (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Ike Mezzenga (3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI) to pace the offense.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jackrabbits got the scoring going in the first, plating an unearned run off a ground-rule double, Gophers error and a sacrifice fly.

Minnesota answered back with eight runs in the bottom of the first. Their first three hitters walked before Ike Mezzenga plated two with an RBI single. Weber Neels then hit an RBI single before a Jake Perry groundout made it 4-1. RBI singles from Kris Hokenson and Brady Jurgella put the 'U' up 6-1 before a two-run double by Bateman gave the home team an 8-1 advantage.

SDSU cut into the lead in the third with a two-run home run from first baseman Dawson Parry. They would add two more in the fourth on a bases loaded walk and an RBI groundout to make it 8-5. Back-to-back doubles in the fifth for SDSU plated run number six.

The 'U' scored its first run since the first inning in the bottom of the sixth. Mezzenga doubled and Neels singled to start the frame. Perry then grounded into a double play, plating Mezzenga. That gave Minnesota its final run in the 9-6 win.

Left-hander Noah DeLuga came into the game and closed it out in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning, his first collegiate save.
