5/20/2023 5:04:00 PM | Baseball

The Gophers season ends with an 18-34 (10-14 Big Ten) record

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 14-6 to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday in the 2023 season finale.

Sophomore right-hander Sam Malec (0-4) started the game and lasted 4.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) with one strikeout and three hits allowed. Caden Capomaccio came in for Malec in relief, giving up two earned runs in an inning of work.

An eight-run top of the sixth turned a 3-1 deficit to an 11-1 lead for the Scarlet Knights.

The Gophers got a nice performance from Jake Perry (3-for-4, 2 2B) while Kyle Bork (1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) and Riley Swenson (1-for-4, HR) both left the yard.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Rutgers got the scoring going in the top of the first, getting a two-run home run from Chris Brito. Minnesota answered back with one in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Ike Mezzenga.

After two scoreless innings for both teams, RU added one in the fourth with an RBI single from Cameron Love. The Gophers had a golden opportunity to cut into the lead in the fifth after they loaded the bases with no outs. However, three straight strikeouts held the score at 3-1.

A two-run home run by Camera Love put the Scarlet Knights up 5-1 in the sixth. RU scored three more off of four walks and two hit-by-pitches, all with two outs in the sixth. A three-run double by Harold Pinkney cleared the bases to put RU up 11-1 to break the game open.

The Gophers would get three back in the sixth on a three-run homer from Kyle Bork. Riley Swenson hit a solo shot in the seventh as well.

Rutgers went on to win by the final score of 14-6.
