Weber Neels Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

He hit .412 in four games for the week
ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Minnesota Golden Gophers catcher/first baseman Weber Neels has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
The Cottage Grove, Minn., native went 7-for-17 (.412) in four games this past week, which included three Gophers wins. He totaled four RBI, two runs scored and a walk. He scored the game-tying run in the ninth against Rutgers on Friday and kept the game alive with a single with two outs and two strikes.
He posted his second career three-hit game in Saturday's comeback 8-7 win over Rutgers while also tallying two RBI. Neels had hits in all four games, including multiple hits vs. South Dakota St. on Tuesday and Rutgers on Saturday.
He had never won Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Neels hit .274 as a true freshman in 2023, with seven home runs and 24 RBI. He totaled 43 hits, including five doubles and a triple, with 25 runs and 25 walks. Neels led all Minnesota true freshmen in every major hitting category.
The Gophers finished their 2023 season Saturday with an 18-34 (10-14 Big Ten) record.
