COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Former Golden Gophers men's hockey captain Sammy Walker was selected for the United States Men's National Team and is set to participate in the 2023 IIHF World Championship in Finland and Latvia from May 12-28.

Walker completed his first professional campaign with the Minnesota Wild organization, making nine appearances in the National Hockey League following his debut on Dec. 10. He scored his first NHL goal Dec. 27 against Winnipeg and added an assist at Nashville in the regular season finale.

The Edina, Minn., native also played 56 games in the American Hockey League, totaling 48 points on 27 goals and 21 assists for the Iowa Wild, including nine goals on the power play and five game winners. Walker closed the year ranked sixth for points by a rookie, but his 0.86 points per game were tied for the most among the league's rookies during the 2022-23 season. He also was named to the AHL All-Star Team and was the AHL Rookie of the Month in November.

A three-year captain for the Maroon and Gold, Walker saw the ice in 144 games during four years on campus and is a member of the 100-point club thanks to 48 goals and 64 assists with Minnesota. It'll be the first time in his hockey career that he will participate in an IIHF World Championship.
