Gianna Gerdes named Most Valuable Performer

The University of Minnesota gymnastics program held its annual end-of-year banquet on Saturday, during which they celebrated the 2023 season and handed out postseason awards.

Minnesota's season was highlighted with yet another trip to NCAA Regionals, as they finished fifth at the Denver Regional on March 31. Following the end of the season, junior Mya Hooten had collected two Big Ten titles (vault and floor) and was named a WCGA First Team All-American on floor and a Second Team All-American on vault. In her final season donning the Maroon and Gold, senior Maddie Quarles was also named a Second Team All-American on vault. Quarles recorded a perfect 10 on vault at the Big Five meet in February, the first of her career.

Gerdes expanded her role in 2023, doing so in an incredibly successful manner. She was named First Team All-Big Ten and earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors for the first time in her career. The Delware, Ohio native competed as an all-arounder in every meet in 2023.

The Gophers wrapped up their final home meet of 2023 by recoding back-to-back perfect 10s on floor, with Halle Remlinger -- earning the first of her career -- first achieving perfection with Hooten following it up with her second 10 of the season (sixth of her career). Remlinger was also a nominee for the prestigious AAI Award and was named Second Team All-Big Ten.

Minnesota's banquet was held at Huntington Bank Stadium and multiple awards were passed out as the Gophers celebrated another successful season.

The coaching staff handed out six awards at the banquet:

Most Valuable Performer: Gianna Gerdes

Most Improved: Marissa Jencks

Freshman of the Year: Seria Johnson

Most Valuable Teammate(s): Abbie Nylin, Mya Hooten and Sarah Moraw

Mariam Award: Halle Remlinger
This award is named after Mariam Pourshoushtari, a former Gopher gymnast who survived meningitis. Her perseverance is a testament to what it means to dedicate all of your personal resources and willpower to achieve something. This honor is given to the gymnasts who the coaches believe has done everything they can to be their very best.

Visionary Leadership Award: Ella Sirjord
The past few years have showcased some incredible out-of-the-gym talents from members of the program. Starting with Mary Korlin-Downs and continuing with Sirjord, the vibrant brand of the team has come to life with extraordinary vision, compelling content and dynamic storytelling. Through various forms of content, Sirjord has been a key contributor to the program's creative content.
