No. 19 overall for incoming Gopher
NASHVILLE - Oliver Moore, an incoming freshman for the University of Minnesota men's hockey team, was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks as the No. 19 pick in the first round of the 2023 Upper Deck NHL Entry Draft Wednesday night live from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena.
Â
Moore is the 26th Golden Gophers to be a first-round selection dating back to 1979, including at least one in each of the last three years. He joins a lengthy list of all-time draft picks for Minnesota becoming the 237th in program history, the most by any NCAA men's hockey team.
Â
A native of Mounds View, Minn., Moore is widely regarded as the fastest skater of all the prospects in the entire 2023 draft class and was No. 8 in Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters. He spent the last two years with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and ranked fourth on the team a season ago with 74 points (31 goals and 43 assists) in 60 appearances, including nine power-play goals and two shorthanded markers.
Â
He shined on the world stage during the 2023 IIHF U18 Men's World Championship in Switzerland, where he served as an alternate captain and won a gold medal. Moore and Team USA went undefeated for the tournament, the team's first gold since 2017, and he recorded at least one point in every game.
Â
The remainder of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft with rounds two through seven is set for Thursday beginning at 10 a.m. (CT) and can be watched on NHL Network and ESPN+.
Â
*At least one Gopher has been drafted in 49 of the last 50 NHL Entry Drafts dating back to 1974 with 2001 being the only exception. Minnesota's 27-consecutive drafts with a selection between 1974-2000 are an NCAA record.
Â
*Minnesota has had at least one first-round pick in five of the last seven drafts.
Â
*Moore joins fellow incoming freshman Sam Rinzel as first-round picks after Rinzel was taken No. 25 overall in 2022 by the same Blackhawks organization. Logan Cooley (No. 3) and Jimmy Snuggerud (No. 23) also were selected in the first round of the 2022 draft prior to joining the Maroon and Gold for the 2022-23 season.
Â
*Moore is Chicago's highest-selected Gopher and second first-round pick in program history, becoming the ninth draft pick of the Blackhawks.
Â
*Erik Johnson remains the highest draft pick in Minnesota history, going No. 1 overall in 2006.
