7/12/2023 7:14:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota will have four athletes - future, past and present - competing at the World Aquatic Championships in Fukuoka, Japan from July 13 to July 30.
Current men's swimmer Bar Soloveychik will join future diver Elna Widerstrom, current diver Vivi Del Angel, and former diver Sarah Bacon at the Marine Messe Fukuoka for the competition.
The diving portion of the championships kicks off on July 13 with the 1-meter women's springboard preliminaries. Future Gopher Elna Widerstrom will be representing her home country of Sweden in the event. Her current personal record for the 1-meter is 359.00 points which she achieved in January of 2022 at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Canada.
Widerstrom will also be competing in the 3-meter springboard dive beginning on July 19 with the preliminary round. Her score of 346.00 at the 2022 FINA World Junior Diving Championships stands as her current personal best. Joining her in the 3-meter springboard is Gopher legend Sarah Bacon who will be representing the United States. Bacon is coming off of a bronze medal performance in the event at the World Aquatics Diving Cup on July 5 in Canada. The 10-time All-American won a gold medal at the 2022 FINA Diving Grand Prix in this event with a personal-best dive of 359.75 points.
In addition to the 3-meter springboard, Bacon will be participating in the 3-meter synchronized dive beginning on July 16. She will be competing with partner Kassidy Cook (Stanford, 2013-18) who represented the USA at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
After a breakout freshman season earning All-America honors in both the platform and 3-meter dives, Gopher sophomore Vivi Del Angel will represent Mexico in the mixed 10-meter synchronized dive. She is no stranger to the world stage as she competed in last year's World Aquatic Championships in three events – women's 10-meter synchronized, mixed 3-meter & 10-meter team and women's 10-meter platform. She will be diving with partner Jose Balleza Isaias who competed in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Swimming events commence on July 22 with a number of preliminary races. Gopher junior Bar Soloveychik will begin his World Aquatic Championships meet with the 400-meter freestyle while representing Israel. Soloveychik currently holds the Israeli national record in the 400 Free with a time of 3:48.55. His meet will continue with the 800-meter freestyle preliminaries on July 24, followed by his final event – the 4x200-meter freestyle relay – beginning on July 27. Soloveychik swam his best 800 Free (7:57.95) and 200 Free (1:48.00) times at the Internazionali di Nuoto - 58 Settecolli in June of 2021 in Rome.
