Three Gophers to Compete at World University Games, One at Para World Swimming Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - A trio of Gopher swimmers will represent the United States at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China. The Games will commence on July 28 with Opening Ceremonies.Ā 

Minnesota seniors Megan Van Berkom, Chris Nagy and William Christenson are set to compete. Swimming events will begin on August 1 and wrap up on August 8. The Chengdu Games were originally set to be held in 2021 but were postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.

Van Berkom will compete in the 400 IM, 200 IM and 200 Fly at the Games. At the Phillips 66 National Championships, she set a new personal record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:42.57. She also swam an Olympic Trials cut time of 2:10.59 in the 200 Fly and finished the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.01.

Nagy is scheduled to compete in both the 1500 Free and 800 Free after setting personal bests in both events at the Phillips 66 National Championships. His current records in the events are 15:20.39 and 8:03.10, respectively.

After finishing 22nd at the National Championships, Christenson will swim the 200 Fly at the Games. His time of 1.59.88 at the Gopher Invite last season stands as his personal record in the event.

Summer Schmit is also set to represent the United States at the 2023 Para Swimming World Championships beginning on July 31 in Manchester, England.

Schmit is returning to the World Championships after winning a bronze medal in the 400 Free in 2022. She will be competing in the 100 Breast, 200 IM, 100 Fly and 400 Free.Ā 

A Stillwater, Minn. native, Schmit also competed at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games where she finished fifth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 100 Fly and seventh in the 400 Free.Ā
