Gophers Close Out Day One of 2025 Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota swimming and diving programs closed out the first of three days at the 2025 Minnesota Invite this evening, with eight Gopher swimmers reaching 'A' group finals and five total athletes meeting NCAA qualifying standards.
Minnesota kicked things off in the women's 200 free relay with a lineup of Livi Wanner, Morgan Thomas, Kamdyn Periat, and Mina Kaljevic finishing third overall with a time of 1:29.68.
Katie McCarthy was the first individual Gopher to compete in an 'A' final this evening, qualifying for the women's 500 free with a preliminary time of 4:45.58. McCarthy finished 7th overall in the event with a finals time of 4:45.12.
Luke Brennan would compete in the men's 500 free 'A' finals with a prelim time of 4:21.46. Brennan finished 6th overall with a finals time of 4:21.92.
In the 200 IM, Grace Drabot earned a shot in the women's 'A' final with a prelim time of 2:00.02. Drabot finished 6th overall with a finals time of 1:59.83. Joe Polyak, John Watson, and Ryan Slonac each got a shot in the men's 'A' final, finishing 4th, 6th, and 7th respectively.
Wanner and Thomas both competed for the Gophers in the women's 50 free after logging prelim times of 22.48 and 22.29. Wanner finished 5th overall with a finals time of 22.53. Thomas closed it out with a third place finish and a time of 22.23, meeting the NCAA qualifying standard in the event.
The Gopher's 400 medley relay teams closed out the swim portion of the day strong, with the women placing 3rd overall with a time of 3:36.43 and the men placing 2nd with a time of 3:10.21.
Elna Widerstrom and Vivi Del Angel finished first and second in the 1-meter diving finals, each collecting NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores over their six dives to end the day with scores of 332.80 and 302.65.
Drew Bennett topped the score sheet in the men's 3-meter competition, posting a 361.70 to qualify for NCAA Zone Diving. Braylon Goodno finished 4th overall, also posting a qualifying score of 348.30.
The Gophers are back tomorrow for day two of the event. Friday's lineup of events include the 200 medley relay, 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 800 free, and 3-meter diving. The action is set to kick off from Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at 10 AM.
