Gophers Set Program Record with 19 WCGA Academic All-Americans

Minnesota posted the No. 3 overall GPA in the country

ITHACA, N.Y. -- A program-record 19 members of the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team were named WCGA Scholastic All-American Award winners, the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association announced on Thursday. 

Also making the top five team GPAs for the first time ever was the University of Minnesota, who came in at number three with a 3.8095 overall GPA. 16 student-athletes earned over a 3.5 GPA, while three earned a 4.0 GPA. Head Coach Jenny Hansen's squad took top percentage honors by having 100% of her team, all 19 members, receiving Scholastic All-America status.

The Gophers have now set the program record for award winners over the last three seasons. The student-athletes that were given the 2023 honors are as follows: Maya Albertin, Gianna Gerdes, Kate Grotenhuis, Mya Hooten, Katie Horak, Marissa Jencks, Seria Johnson, Emily Koch, Mallory LaNeave, Sarah Moraw, Abigail Nylin, Lauren Pearl, Maddie Quarles, Halle Remlinger, Brooklyn Rowray, Tiarre Sales, Ella Sirjord, Ali Sonier and Megan Steensland.

Sarah Moraw (kinesiology) and Tiarre Sales (curriculum and instruction) each finished the academic year with an impressive 4.0 grade-point average.

Minnesota adds these honors to a season in which 15 team members – Maya Albertin, Gianna Gerdes, Kate Grotenhuis, Mya Hooten, Katie Horak, Marissa Jencks, Emily Koch, Mallory LeNeave, Abbie Nylin, Lauren Pearl, Maddie Quarles, Halle Remlinger, Tiarre Sales, Ella Sirjord, Ali Sonier – earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. 11 – Albertin, Gerdes, Hooten, Horak, Jencks, Koch, LeNeave, Nylin, Quarles, Sales and Sonier – were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Those 11 also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.

To be a WCGA Scholastic All-American Award winner, student-athletes must have a yearly or cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or above. 2023 marked the fourth year in a row that the women's gymnastics team has had at least 13 members earn the academic award.

The Gophers women's gymnastics team posted a 3.8095 grade-point average during the 2022-23 academic year.
