Gophers Name Men's Hockey Captains for 2023-24

9/7/2023 1:00:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Combined 486 games played by four leaders

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers announced Bryce Brodzinski, Mike Koster, Jaxon Nelson, and Mason Nevers have been named team captains for the 2023-24 season, the 103rd installment of Minnesota men's hockey.

After winning back-to-back Big Ten Conference regular season championships and consecutive trips to the NCAA Frozen Four, the Minnesota leadership group looks to extend those trends with this year's squad.

Coming back to the lineup for his fifth season, Brodzinski has played more games for the Maroon and Gold than any active player, seeing the ice in 146 outings. He returns from a career year in 2022-23 where the Blaine, Minn., native posted 19 goals and 12 assists for 31 points. Thanks to his first hat trick as a Gopher, and a career-best, four-point performance in the NCAA Fargo Regional opener versus Canisius, he was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team and its Most Outstanding Player. He put away 13 of his goals during 24 B1G outings, the third-most of any player in the league, and had a career-long point streak of six games from Nov. 5 to Nov. 25.

With more than 100 career games to his name, Koster will anchor a young defensive corps after enjoying a breakout junior campaign for Minnesota a year ago. The Chaska, Minn., native, posted career highs with six goals and 23 assists, more than doubling his offensive output of his first two seasons combined. He tallied a four-point performance in his 100th career game against Ohio State Feb. 24 with two goals and two assists, leading to B1G Second Star of the Week honors. Koster also shined during the postseason where he was the team's top scoring defenseman, recording six points in six games, including four points at the NCAA Tournament.

Nevers has skated in 103 career games for Minnesota during his three-year career and totaled 42 points behind 18 goals and 24 assists. In the 100th game of his tenure, the NCAA Fargo Regional opener against Canisius, the Edina, Minn., product scored a power-play goal as he set career highs in goals (10), assists (13) and points (23) a season ago. He recorded four multi-point performances during his junior year, including a career-best three points versus Michigan Jan. 21. Nevers also was named the Gophers' 2022-23 Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award winner and twice has been selected to the Academic All-B1G Team.

Nelson served as an alternate captain last season and is back for his fifth year with the Maroon and Gold after making 130 career college hockey appearances. The Magnolia, Minn., product has amassed 58 career points with 23 goals and 35 assists, which includes a career best in all offensive categories last year of goals (10), assists (17) and points (27). He ranked 18th nationally and third on the team with four game-winning goals in 2022-23 and had a point in all four NCAA Tournament appearances, totaling five points. Nelson's also been named to the Academic All-B1G team in each of the previous three years.
