Six points for the sophomore

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Thanks to a six-point weekend and his second career hat trick for the Golden Gophers, Jimmy Snuggerud was chosen as the Big Ten Conference Men's Hockey First Star of the Week Tuesday.

The sophomore ignited Minnesota's offense during a series split with no. 17/18 Colorado College, tallying multi-goal efforts in each outing for six points behind five goals and one assist. That all started less than 16 hours after he returned to campus from winning a gold medal at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship with Team USA in Sweden and a transatlantic flight home.

The Chaska, Minn., native scored twice Sunday in the series opener before setting a new career high with a four-point performance during the finale, including his first hat trick of the season and second of his collegiate career. Snuggerud scored half of the team's 10 weekend goals on just 14 shots and was a plus-3 against the nationally-ranked Tigers.

He now has multi-goal efforts in three of his previous four games played, eight total goals over his last five outings, and ranks second in the NCAA with 16 goals. Snuggerud leads the Maroon and Gold with five power-play markers and now is tied with fellow sophomore Brody Lamb, scoring three game-winning goals for the Gophers.

This is the fourth weekly honor during his career and the second time this season he was named the league's top star of the week. Minnesota has totaled seven weekly awards from the B1G this season, coming from five different players: Jimmy Snuggerud (Jan. 10, Oct. 17), Rhett Pitlick (Dec. 5, Nov. 7), Bryce Brodzinski (Nov. 28), Brody Lamb (Nov. 14), and Justen Close (Oct. 24).
