Minnesota tallied a score of 196.300
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 6 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team opened their 2024 home slate with a win over Eastern Michigan. The Gophers tallied a score of 196.300 while EMU posted a team score of 194.900.
"I'm really proud of how the team pulled through," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We had some adversity to deal with and to have some new people step in at the last minute speaks volumes about our team and what we've been practicing. We have some things we need to improve on, but it's early in the season and we have plenty of time to get back in the gym. I can't wait for next week against Iowa."
The Gophers followed up last week's team score of 196.850 with a 196.300 this week.
Gophers senior Gianna Gerdes took home the all-around crown with a 39.475. She delivered a 9.825 on bars, 9.825 on vault, 9.900 on balance beam and a 9.925 on floor.
Fellow senior and three-time All-American Mya Hooten dazzled in her floor routine, posting a perfect 10.000 for the sixth time in her career and first this season. As a team, Minnesota posted an impressive 49.575 on floor, with three scores at 9.900 or above.
"We knew floor could be a highlight for this team," said Hansen. "Last week, we just needed to have a little more control on our landings. We really honed in on that this week in practice and it showed today in the meet. I'm really proud of this team and to end on floor in the Pav is special."
