No. 15 Gophers Host No. 18 Iowa in Big Opener Monday

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 15 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team (4-0, 0-0 B1G) is getting set for its Big Ten home opener. The Gophers host No. 18 Iowa (1-0, 0-0 B1G) on Monday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. BTN will provide television coverage while fans can follow along with stats at Gophersports.com.

SCOUTING MINNESOTA
  • The Gophers roster 19 student-athletes in the 2024 season, led by three-time All-American and 2023 Big Ten Champion Mya Hooten and First Team All-Big Ten selection Gianna Gerdes. The Gophers added eight newcomers to the fray this season, including seven freshmen and a transfer from Pittsburgh University. Notable departures from 2023 include two-time All-American and three-time Second Team All-Big Ten selection Maddie Quarles. Two-time All-Big Ten honoree Halle Remlinger also departed after earning second team honors last season as a senior.
  • A senior from Woodbury, Minn., Hooten was a 2022 NCAA All-American in floor (first team, 9.500) and vault (second team, 9.9000) and 2023 WCGA Regular Season All-American in floor (first team) and vault (second team). She earned her first NCAA All-America honors in 2021 in floor (first team, 9.950) and vault (second team, 9.8750). Hooten posted a perfect 10, the sixth of her career, on  the floor on Jan. 13 against Eastern Michigan.
  • Minnesota won its session against No. 13 Oregon State, No. 24 Southern Utah and No. 31 BYU on Jan. 6 in Vegas, posting a road-meet opener record score of 196.850. The Gophers followed that up with a home opener win against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 13, 196.300-194.900.
SCOUTING IOWA
  • The University of Iowa enters the week at No. 18 after defeating Washington in its season opener. They scored 196.400 in the win, which is the second-highest score in a season opener in program history.
    Senior Adeline Kenlin and sophomore Karina Muñoz were named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch. Kenlin was the runner-up at the Big Ten Championships on beam, while Muñoz competed all-around last year as a true freshman.
    The GymHawks were picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Poll, one spot ahead of Minnesota.
    Head coach Larissa Libby has led Iowa to 23 straight NCAA Regional appearances (either as a team or individually). The 2024 season is Libby's 20th as head coach (spent four years as an assistant previously).
LAST SEASON
  • The 'U' is coming off a 2023 season that saw it post a 10-6-1 (4-4-1 Big Ten) meet record, finishing fifth in the regular season standings. The Gophers went on to finish third at the Big Ten Championships (197.250) and fifth at the NCAA Regionals (197.200). They will be looking to qualify for nationals for the third time in the last four seasons in 2024.
GOPHERS IN BIG TEN OPENERS, VS. IOWA
  • Since 1989, Minnesota is 27-8 in home openers at the Pav. Under Jenny Hansen, the Gophers are 9-1, with the only loss coming in 2017. The 'U' has won seven straight home opening meets after its win over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 13.
  • In Big Ten openers, Minnesota holds a 21-15 overall record. In Big Ten home openers, however, Minnesota is 26-9.
  • Against the Hawkeyes, Minnesota holds a 22-8-1 series record.
COACHING STAFF
  • Head coach Jenny Hansen is in her 10th season at the helm of the program. Associate head coach Rich Stenger and assistant coach Geralen Stack-Eaton also enter their 10th years with the team. Fellow assistant Kiki Parenteau was promoted to assistant coach this summer after serving as a volunteer assistant for the past two years. She will be entering year three in 2024.
  • During her time with the Golden Gophers, Hansen is 118-48-1 in meets.
    Also under her watch, Gophers took home the 2021 Big Ten title their first conference crown since 2006 and the program's sixth ever. In 2022, Minnesota set a program-record by finishing sixth (197.1125) at the NCAA Championships.
WEEK TWO STANDOUTS; LAST TIME OUT
  • Gophers senior Gianna Gerdes, took home the all-around crown against EMU with a 39.475. She delivered season-bests in both bars (9.900) and floor (9.925).
  • Mya Hooten earned the sixth perfect 10 of her career after a dazzling performance on floor. For her efforts, she was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week for the fifth time in her career.
  • Seria Johnson tied a career-best on floor with a 9.900 performance. As a team, Minnesota posted a 49.575 team score on floor, which is tied for seventh-highest all-time.
WCGA AND ROAD TO NATIONALS RANKINGS
  • Entering week three, the Golden Gophers move to No. 15 in the Road to Nationals rankings. The 'U' ranks 9th in the country in floor 17th in beam, 19th in bars and 29th in vault.
  • Individually, Minnesota's Gianna Gerdes ranks 18th in the nation in all-around, 27th in beam and 22nd in floor. Mya Hooten ranks 5th in floor while Brooklyn Rowray ranks No. 1 in the country on balance beam after posting a 9.975 on Jan. 6.
  • Minnesota began the 2024 season ranked No. 18 in the WCGA Preseason poll. B1G WEEKLY AWARDS
  • Minnesota had a gymnast recognized by the Big Ten eight different times in 2023. Mya Hooten earned weekly awards three times, including Gymnast of the Week and Event Specialist twice. She was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week again on Monday after her perfect 10 on floor Saturday.
  • Gianna Gerdes was named Gymnast of the Week once, also the first of her career. Then-freshman Seria Johnson was named Freshman of the Week after her performance at the Wasatch Classic.
  • Jordyn Lyden was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Jan. 8, 2024. She posted a 9.825 score on bars in her first collegiate meet. She's the first Gopher to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Seria Johnson on Jan. 16, 2023.
MARKETING/PROMOTIONS
  • The Gymnastics team will be collecting toys to benefit local communities affected by cancer. Fans who donate will be entered in to win an exclusive Gopher Gymnastics leotard! Preferred donated items: puzzles, board games, decks of cards, board books, fidgets, coloring books. 
  • Fans are encouraged to wear Maroon.
  • Students will get a Gophers gymnastics t-shirt and a slice of pizza while supplies last.
