Four helpers from the freshman
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Sam Rinzel was named the Big Ten Conference Third Star of the Week Tuesday after recording four assists to lead the Minnesota men's hockey team to a series sweep over Robert Morris last weekend.
Following a career-high three assists in a home win against Colorado College Jan. 8, the freshman matched that effort the very next outing as he posted another three-assist game to begin the series with the Colonials Jan. 12. Rinzel helped create three of the Gophers' four goals Friday before adding another assist Saturday to extend his career-long point streak to three games and earn the first weekly award of his Maroon and Gold tenure.
The Chanhassen, Minn., native is now ranked third in the NCAA for both points (18) and assists (17) by a freshman defenseman and that comes against the nation's best strength of schedule. Rinzel continues to be nearly a point-per-game producer in his first college hockey campaign, totaling 18 points in 22 games.
The Gophers have picked up eight weekly B1G awards this year with six different players earning the recognition: Sam Rinzel (Jan. 16), Jimmy Snuggerud (Jan. 10, Oct. 17), Rhett Pitlick (Dec. 5, Nov. 7), Bryce Brodzinski (Nov. 28), Brody Lamb (Nov. 14), and Justen Close (Oct. 24).
