Gophers Drop Contest at Michigan State

Dawson Garcia had 22 points and nine rebounds and Mike Mitchell Jr. added 14 points and five assists, but short-handed Minnesota (12-6, 3-4 Big Ten) was fell to Michigan State (11-7, 3-4 B1G) 76-66 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.Ā
The Gophers were playing without starting point guard Elijah Hawkins, who leads the Big Ten in assists. Pharrel Payne added seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Minnesota, while Cam Christie had eight points, Braeden Carrington had seven points, and Joshua Ola-Joseph finished with four points and five boards.
Minnesota got off to a slow start, falling behind 7-0 before a dunk from Payne and a three-pointer by Christie pulled the Gophers within 9-5. The Spartans stretched the lead to 15-7, but three-pointers from Mitchell Jr. and Garcia cut MSU's advantage to 17-13 with 12:30 left in the half. Another trey from Mitchell Jr., his second of the half, had the Gophers within three at 22-19. A 6-2 Spartans run expanded the lead back to seven points, 28-21, but Minnesota answered with a 6-2 run of its own on jumpers from Christie and Mitchell Jr. and a layup by Garcia. The Spartans once again pushed the lead to eight points late, but a three from Carrington sent the Gophers to the locker room within five at 37-32. Garcia led Minnesota with nine first-half points and Mitchell Jr. had eight, but the Gophers had 11 turnovers and were outscored 24-6 in the paint.
Mitchell Jr. opened the second half with a deep three-pointer and Ola-Joseph added a layup to tie the score at 37-37, and a pair of free throws from Garcia gave the Gophers their first lead of the game at 39-38. Jack Wilson, who entered the game when Payne was whistled for his fourth foul, scored on a short hook shot and Christie drained a trey to answer a 5-0 MSU run with one for the Gophers and a 44-43 edge. The Spartans went on a 6-2 run for a 49-46 lead, but a pair of free throws from Ola-Joseph and one from Mitchell Jr. tied the score. MSU's 7-2 run put the Spartans back in front 56-51, but Tom Izzo was called for a technical foul, allowing Garcia to add a pair of free throws to cut it to 56-53. Garcia scored the next three field goals and added a free throw to make it eight straight points for him, and Payne scored on a layup to tie the score at 62-62 with 5:39 left. But the Spartans went on a 10-2 run to expand the lead back to eight points and recorded the 10-point win.
Minnesota made 21-of-49 (.429) field goals, including 7-of-20 (.350) three-pointers, but was just 17-of-26 (.654) at the free throw line and committed 19 turnovers.
The Gophers return home to play host to Wisconsin in the lone Border Battle this season on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Tipoff at Williams Arena is set for 6:00 p.m. CDT, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
