Gophers Fall in Close Game to Wisconsin

1/23/2024 8:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Elijah Hawkins had 16 points and nine assists, Dawson Garcia added 10 points, and Pharrel Payne had nine points and a team-high seven rebounds, but Minnesota (12-7, 3-5 Big Ten) fell just short of upsetting No. 13/10 Wisconsin (15-4, 7-1 B1G) at Williams Arena. The Gophers, who trailed by as many as 15 points in the first have, mounted a furious second-half rally and led late in the game, but the Badgers held on for a 61-59 win.

Hawkins fueled the Gophers' comeback, as he made 3-of-4 three-pointers and scored 13 of his 16 points after the break. Minnesota led 57-55 with 1:51 left, but the Badgers closed the game with a 6-2 run to sneak out the win, its seventh-straight in the series, with the last five all being by six points or less.

As a team, Minnesota made 7-of-10 second-half three-pointers to finish 10-of-24 (.417) from beyond the arc, but was just 22-of-58 (.379) from the field for the game. Hawkins missed Minnesota's game at Michigan State last Thursday due to an ankle injury, but returned to make 6-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-8 treys, while leading the team with nine assists and adding five rebounds and a pair of steals in 37 minutes.

The Gophers trailed 8-2 early, but three-pointers from Mike Mitchell Jr. and Garcia gave Minnesota its first lead, 9-8. A second 8-2 run by the Badgers, which started the game by making 6-of-10 field goals, gave them a 16-11 lead at the second media timeout. A layup by Joshua Ola-Joseph pulled the Gophers within 16-13, but a 13-2 run by Wisconsin stretched the visitors' lead to 29-15 with 5:40 left in the half. Minnesota, which was 5-of-23 from the field at that point, got a layup from Isaiah Ihnen, a three-pointer from the left wing by Hawkins, and a right-baseline jumper from Braeden Carrington to cut the deficit to 32-22 with 2:39 remaining and trailed 34-24 at the half. Eight Gophers scored in the first half, led by Payne's five points to go with five rebounds. The Gophers finished the half just 9-of-29 (.310) from the field, including 3-of-14 (.214) from behind the arc.

Hawkins hit a deep three to get the second half started, and Payne and Hawkins added layups for a 7-0 run to get the crowd on its feet and pull Minnesota within three points at 34-31. Hawkins connected on his second trey of the half to make it 36-34. Wisconsin expanded the lead back to 41-34, but Hawkins beat the shot clock on a three from near the midcourt logo and Cam Christie knocked down his first three of the night to cut it to 41-40 and force a UW timeout with 14:21 on the clock. The Badgers pushed the lead back to 45-40, but Mitchell Jr. and Christie each drained three-pointers to reclaim a 46-45 lead and make the Williams Arena crowd of 10,013 erupt. Wisconsin responded with a 9-0 run over a span of 3:13 to reclaim a 54-46 lead with 7:16 left, but layups by Hawkins and Payne and a Garcia three from in front of the Gophers bench pulled Minnesota back within one point. Garcia then followed with a game-tying 16-foot jumper and a layup for a 57-55 lead with 2:37 left. Wisconsin tied the score with 1:51 remaining, but a Carrington free throw gave Minnesota a 58-57 edge with 0:34 on the clock. Four UW free throws, the final two with 0:05 left, gave the Badgers a 61-58 lead. Wisconsin then intentionally fouled Mitchell Jr., who made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, chased down his rebound and missed a bank shot. Carrington got the rebound, but had his layup attempt blocked and the Badgers escaped with the win.

Minnesota plays at Penn State Saturday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
