Gophers Set for Home-and-Home Series with Minnesota State

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 5 ranked Minnesota Gopher women's hockey team (18-5-1) takes to the ice this weekend for a home-and-home series with the Minnesota State Mavericks (10-15-0).
The Gophers will host the Mavericks on Friday, Jan. 26 at 6:00 p.m. CT before traveling to Minnesota State for a 2:00 p.m. CT game on Saturday, Jan. 27. Saturday's contest will be broadcast on Fox 9+.
Last Time Out
The Maroon and Gold returned to winning ways last weekend with a sweep on the road at Bemidji State. Lucy Morgan and the Gophers shut out the Beavers on Friday behind goals from Josefin Bouveng and Allie Franco. Bouveng added another goal on Saturday in addition to Ava Lindsay and Emma Kreisz to secure the 3-1 win and sweep over Bemidji State. Five Gophers had multi-point weekends including Bouveng, Kreisz, Madison Kaiser, Peyton Hemp and Madeline Wethington.
Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks are 10-15-0 so far this season and 4-14 in WCHA play. Senior Sydney Langseth leads the way for Minnesota State with 26 points on the season (11g, 15a), while fellow senior Jamie Nelson paces the Mavericks with 13 goals. Sophomores Whitney Tuttle and Taylor Otremba have provided the Mavericks with an offensive boost, scoring 23 and 17 points, respectively. Senior Lauren Barbro and junior Suzette Faucher have played a majority of the minutes between the posts for Minnesota State. Barbro has six wins for the Mavericks, including one shut out. MSU us 3-3 in the month of January with wins over Lindenwood and No. 10 St. Cloud State. Last time out, the Mavericks were swept at home by No. 2 Wisconsin.
Multiple Gopher Contributors
The Maroon and Gold have had various players make an impact this season. Redshirt junior Abbey Murphy has led the scoring charge with 22 goals in 24 games so far this season. After a multipoint performance last weekend, sophomore Josefin Bouveng has totaled 25 points in 24 games. Juniors Ella Huber and Peyton Hemp have each contributed 20+ points for the season. Freshman Ava Lindsay and Emma Kreisz have boosted the Gophers' offensive attack, scoring 16 and 18 points, respectively in their rookie seasons. Nelli Laitinen has found the back of the net six times and assisted on nine goals, becoming a major contributor for the Maroon and Gold in her sophomore campaign. Fellow sophomore Madison Kaiser is the latest of 10 Gophers to cross the double-digit point threshold after collecting two assists in the weekend series at Bemidji State.
Stout Goaltending
With two goaltenders on the HCA Goaltender of the Year Watch List, the 'U' has high-quality depth in the net. On Friday, Jan. 19, fifth-year transfer Lucy Morgan picked up her second shutout of the season to go along with nine wins. Fellow goalie Skylar Vetter tallied her ninth win of the season on Saturday, Jan. 20. Vetter currently holds the program record for saves in a game with 52, set on Oct. 27 against Ohio State. Gopher great Noora Raty previously held the record at 51.
Captains Leading the Way
Junior Peyton Hemp was named team captain this fall for the first time in her career, while Madeline Wethington, Abbey Murphy and Ella Huber were named assistant captains, also the first time they've worn a letter. All three of the Gopher leaders have made their presence felt in 2023-24, with Murphy scoring 22 goals, Huber registering 23 points, Hemp scoring eight goals and assisting 12 times, and M. Wethington scoring four goals and assisting eight goals.
Newcomers Making an Impact
Freshman Ava Lindsay has scored eight goals so far and added eight assists. After scoring six points over five games, including two multi-point games, Lindsay was named WCHA Rookie of the Month for December. Fellow freshman Emma Kreisz has also given Minnesota a boost, recording 14 assists over 24 games to go along with four goals. Fifth-year transfers Taylor Stewart and Solveig Neunzert have also played substantial roles on Minnesota's defense. Neunzert scored her first goal as a Gopher in the win over Wisconsin on Dec. 8 while Stewart has tallied two goals and two assists for the season.
Tracking Scoring Milestones
Madeline Wethington added to her pursuit of 100 career points by assisting two goals in a win over Bemidji on Saturday. With her four goals and eight assists so far this year, she now sits at 89 career points (26g, 63a). Peyton Hemp sits at 80 career points (36g, 44a) after tallying an two assists in the series against the Beavers last weekend.
Quest for Eighth National Title
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2023-24.
