The ‘U’ Ties Ohio State on Saturday, Buckeyes Take Extra Conference Point

10/12/2024 6:15:00 PM | Women's Hockey

COLUMBUS, OH - The No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team's second matchup with the No. 4/5 Ohio State Buckeyes ended as a 1-1 tie, with the Buckeyes claiming the extra conference point in a shootout. The Gophers move to a 4-1-1 record on the season, and start 0-1-1 in WCHA conference play.

For the second straight day, Ohio State got on the board first. Jordyn Petrie sent the puck to the back of the net 4:08 into the first period, giving the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Like on Friday's matchup, Saturday's shot on goal battle remained tight through the first period, with the Gophers leading 10-8 going into intermission.

The second period saw each team maintain heavy pressure at the net, however the score remained 1-0 in favor of Ohio State heading into the second intermission. Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark, in her second collegiate start, made ten saves in the second, including a penalty-killing snag on the goaline with 5:24 left in the period.

The Maroon and Gold would get on the board 3:54 into the third period, as Josefin Bouveng would tally a score with assists from Abbey Murphy and Nelli Laitinen. The Gophers would outshoot the Buckeyes 11-7 throughout the period, but the game would ultimately go into overtime.

Overtime saw Ohio State on the attack, making 5 SOG to Minnesota's zero. Still, Clark made all five saves, clinchings the tie for the Gophers.

Abbey Murphy was the lone scorer in the shootout for Minnesota, while Ohio State notched two goals, clinching the extra conference point and closing out the weekend's series.

Quotable:
"I'm really proud of our team," said head coach Brad Frost. "I thought we played some really, really good hockey throughout the game. That's two games in a row we've outshot Ohio State, and they're a high shot volume team, but they defended well. We started to get to the net a little more in the third period, with Josefin [Bouveng] getting that goal to tie it up, and then chances after that both ways, but really proud of our group and how they responded in the third."

Additionally Quotes from Coach Frost:
On Hannah Clark

"She gave us a chance. That's all you can ask for in a top-four matchup like that. She was really steady, really solid. They scored early in the first and she shut the door the rest of the way. She gave us plenty of chances in the shootout to win that. I'm proud of her and her effort here today."

Notable:
- Hannah Clark's 29 saves were the most by a Gopher freshman since Skylar Vetter's 29 on Jan. 14, 2022.
- Hannah Clark's 29 saves are the most by a Minnesota goaltender so far this season.
- Abbey Murphy has recorded at least one point in each of Minnesota's first six games of the season.
- Minnesota's last shootout loss came against Wisconsin on Feb. 10, 2023.
