MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 3/4 University of Minnesota women's hockey program picked up its second loss of the season on Friday night, falling 5-0 to No. 1 Wisconsin at home.
The Badgers opened up scoring on the night with a Cassie Hall goal late in the first period. Wisconsin also led the SOG battle 14-5 through the first third of the game. However, the Maroon and Gold held firm on the penalty kill throughout the period, forcing Wisconsin to go scoreless on their two power play opportunities.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of Wisconsin through the second period. The Gophers continued to trail in the SOG battle, although they held the Badgers to only 10 shots and no goals in the second. Minnesota had a power play opportunity after an interference call with under six minutes left before second intermission, however the Maroon and Gold came up empty-handed.
The third period saw a heavy Wisconsin attack at the Minnesota net. The Badgers would score four goals in the span of six minutes, clinching game one of the first Border Battle series of the season.
Senior goaltender Skylar Vetter made 25 saves on the night before freshman Hannah Clark took over at net. Clark would make two saves on two shots to close out the last 12:10 of the game.
Quotable:
"Really disappointing," said head coach Brad Frost. "We're one-nothing going into the third, and in six minutes they score four goals and blow the whole thing open. Obviously, we got to be better in all facets, and I expect that we'll do that tomorrow."
Notable:
- The Gophers are the first Wisconsin opponent this season to hold the Badgers scoreless in a period.
- Minnesota was outshot 32-18, the largest SOG margin for the Gophers all season.
- Wisconsin has scored at least five goals in each of their seven games this season.
- The last time Minnesota was shut out was against Wisconsin on Feb. 17, 2024.
Up Next:
The Gophers will return to the Ridder Arena on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3:00 p.m. CT to take on Wisconsin in the second game of this weekend's series.
