The ‘U’ Drops Game Two Against No. 1 Wisconsin 4-3

10/19/2024 6:40:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -  The No. 3/4 Golden Gopher women's hockey team fell to a 4-3-1 record after dropping to No. 1 Wisconsin 4-3 at home. Minnesota moves to 0-2-1 in WCHA conference play on the season.

Both teams were scoreless through the first period. The Gophers led the SOG battle 9-7 and had one power play opportunity, but came up short heading into the first intermission.

Junior defender Sydney Morrow opened up scoring on the day, tallying her second goal of the season just 21 seconds into the second period, unassisted. Morrow would then get her third goal of the season a little over a minute later, scoring on a power play opportunity with assists from Natalie Mlynkova and Chloe Primerano. The Maroon and Gold then added to their lead with a Madison Kaiser goal with a 11:16 left to play in the period. The Badgers' Laila Edwards tallied a power play goal halfway through the second, bringing the score to 3-1 heading into the second intermission.

Wisconsin took full control of scoring in the third period, tallying three goals in total en route to a comeback victory. The Badgers brought the score to 3-2 with their second power play goal of the game, as Lacey Eden sent the puck to the back of the net just 35 seconds into the period. Wisconsin then tied the game with 15:18 left to play, courtesy of Hannah Halverson, before taking the lead with 6:07 left. The Gophers added an extra skater with just over a minute remaining, but ultimately could bring the game back even.

Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark made her third career start on Saturday, finishing with 25 saves and a .862 save percentage.

Quotable:
"Certainly a really tough pill to swallow when you give up the lead like that in the third," said head coach Brad Frost. "That was tough, but I was really proud of our team's effort to compete. Wisconsin's kind of the premiere team in the country right now, and so we got a close up look in regards to where we need to get to, and we're gonna learn from this weekend."

Additional Quotes from Coach Frost:
On Sydney Morrow
"[She was] awesome. Big power play goal there, her second, huge to get us up three. Unfortunately, hit the crossbar in the third there for her potential hat trick, but overall, really good to see [Morrow] start producing here from an offensive standpoint."

Notable:
- The Gophers are the only team to have a lead over Wisconsin in a game this season.
- Sydney Morrow notched the third multi-goal game of her career.
- Madison Kaiser tallied her first goal of the season, and 14th goal of her career.
- The last time Minnesota went winless in a home series was Jan. 12-13, 2024 vs. Ohio State.
- Minnesota and Wisconsin tied 29-29 in SOG.

Up Next:
Next week, the Gophers will play a home-and-home series against the Minnesota State Mavericks. The first game will be on Friday, Oct. 25 at Ridder Arena, and the second game will be on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Mankato, Minn.
