Weimer Leads the Way for Minnesota at Wisconsin's Pre-Nationals Meet

The junior set another lifetime best, was the top Big Ten finisher.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota cross country program raced to 13th-place and 14th-place finishes at the Wisconsin NCAA Pre-Nationals meet in Madison, Wis., at the Zimmer Championship Course on Saturday. Ali Weimer was Minnesota's top runner, finishing in 11th in the women's 6K, while Emmet Anderson overcame an early team-fall to finish 22nd overall in his 8K competition.
The women's 'A Race' was won by No. 2 BYU with 105 team points followed by No. 3 Washington who finished with 157 points. Minnesota was 13th overall with 417 points, finishing ahead of the likes of No. 14 Furman (420 points), No. 23 Syracuse (457 points), No. 27 Lipscomb, No. 30 Michigan State (490 points), No. 24 Boston College (534 points), No. 29 Arkansas (568 points), No. 15 Tennessee (579 points) and No. 22 Ole Miss (804 points).
The men's 'B Race' title was claimed by Purdue with 73 team points while Illinois was the runner up with 148 points and Ohio State third with 177 team points. Minnesota was 14th overall with 316 points, overcoming an early race fall where five different Gophers hit the ground before recovering and all finishing the 8K competition.
Just weeks after an incredible run at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, Weimer impressively got faster in Madison, clocking a lifetime best 6K time of 19:38.5 to finish 11th overall. In a field that included each of the top five teams in the nation, Weimer finished ahead of the No. 1 runners of the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 teams in the country. Just weeks before the Big Ten Championships Weimer was also the top Big Ten finisher at the event, in a field that had five total teams from the conference. Weimer's time also improves her No. 2 6K time in program history, dropping her personal best time by eight seconds from 19:46.8.
Emma Atkinson led the rest of Minnesota's lineup in Madison, finishing 76th overall in the second-fastest time of her career at 20:28.2. Sophomore Izzy Roemer was 92nd overall in a time of 20:33.9, just a second off of her lifetime best time that she set this season. Freshman Isabelle Schmitz was fourth among the Maroon and Gold in a time of 20:40.0, marking yet another lifetime best for the rookie from Hutchinson, Minn. The top five for Minnesota was rounded out by Erin Reidy, who was 135th overall in a time of 20:54.8.
Anderson's finish in 22nd is his second-best placement of the season for the redshirt junior in a time of 24:24.3. Noah Kohut-Jackson moved up 26 spots over the final 2K of the race to finish in 58th in a time of 24:54.6. Third for Minnesota was Lucas Florsheim in 62nd, clocking a time of 24:57.3, his second fastest 8K of the season. Dan VanAcker was fourth among Minnesota's runners in a time of 25:09.1, placing 83rd, while Aidan Jones was fifth among the Maroon and Gold in a time of 25:13.7 to finish 91st.
