Minnesota Earns Big Ten Tournament Bid in 3-0 Win Over Hoosiers

10/20/2024 2:49:00 PM | Soccer

The Gophers earn a bid to the Big Ten Tournament

ST. PAUL - Earning a berth to the Big Ten Tournament, the Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-3-3, 5-3-2 B1G) defeated the Indiana Hoosiers (6-8-2, 1-8-1 B1G) 3-0 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Khyah Harper's game-winner marked the sixth of the season for the forward. The accomplishment matches a Minnesota season record that hasn't been touched since Simone Kolander (2015). With one more game-winning goal this season, Harper will be the Maroon and Gold's standalone leader in the category.

Harper, Evelyn Calhoon, and Sophia Boman all found the back of the Hoosiers' net. Harper led the offensive drive with seven shots followed by Boman who had four. Assists came from Sophia Romine and Harper. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Martin picked up the shutout with one save.

In the 13th minute, Romine earned possession and delivered a long ball to Harper's feet. Harper broke through Indiana's backline and finished a bar-down goal to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the first half.

It would be Harper in the 56th minute who assisted Calhoon. Calhoon put the ball past the keeper, scoring her first goal of the season.

In the 84th minute, Harper was fouled by an Indiana defender. Boman stepped up and converted the penalty kick to a third goal, handing the Gophers the 3-0 win.

Minnesota returns home next Sunday to face No. 14 Iowa. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. CT at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
