MANKATO, MINN. - The No. 4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team completes its sweep of the Minnesota State Mavericks on Saturday, winning an overtime thriller 3-2 in Mankato, Minn. The Gophers move to a 6-3-1 (2-3-1 WCHA) record on the season.Â
Minnesota opened up scoring when senior forward Peyton Hemp tallied her second power play goal in two games midway through the first period. Hemp's goal was assisted by Abbey Murphy and Josefin Bouveng, and was her third goal of the season. The Gophers led 1-0 going into first intermission, and led the SOG battle 8-6.
The Mavericks fought back hard in the second period, scoring two unanswered goals to take their first lead of the weekend. Madison Mashuga brought the game even with a score 6:38 into the period. Audrey Garton then got Minnesota State up 2-1 with under two minutes to play. Despite outshooting the Mavericks 11-6 in the second, the Gophers came up empty-handed heading into second intermission.
The Maroon and Gold brought the game back even halfway through the third period, thanks to sophomore forward Ava Lindsay's first goal of the season. Sydney Morrow and Skylar Vetter had assists on Lindsay's goal. The period remained scoreless through the end, sending the game to overtime.
The Gophers would clinch the game two minutes into overtime on Peyton Hemp's second goal of the game, assisted by Natalie Mlynkova and Nelli Laitinen. Hemp finished the weekend with three goals in total.
Senior goaltender Skylar Vetter had 11 saves and a .867 save percentage in her sixth start and fourth win of the season.
Quotable:
"Snuck one out here in overtime," said head coach Brad Frost. "Obviously getting that tying goal there in the third, late, by Ava [Lindsay] was big, and Peyton [Hemp] finishing in OT was huge for us. Credit to Mankato, they played extremely hard. We need to do a little better job from the drop of the puck, but we will do that as we continue to go forward. Looking forward to getting up to Bemidji next week."
