ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference announced Tuesday that Minnesota's Sam Rinzel and Brody Lamb were recognized as the Men's Hockey First and Second Star of the Week honorees, respectively.
Rinzel closed the weekend sweep over St. Thomas with five points, including his second multi-goal game of the year during a three-point outing in the Gophers' home opener Friday. He followed that up with a two-assist game Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in front of more than 10,000 fans. The sophomore has already doubled his goal output from a season ago when he finished with two as he put away four goals in his first five games to begin the campaign. He also set a career high Friday behind a plus-5 rating and extended his career-long point streak to all six games in 2024-25.
Lamb's natural hat trick in a span of 16 minutes Saturday helped Minnesota to its second-straight sweep of an in-state opponent. The junior's first collegiate hat trick came with all three goals on the power play and after recording a goal in Friday night's home opener, finished with a four-goal weekend. It was the Gophers' first natural hat trick since Ben Meyers against Wisconsin on Feb. 25, 2022. Lamb tallied the eventual game winner Saturday, the fifth of his career, and all five have come away from home. He now has points in four-consecutive outings and five of six appearances this season.
The Maroon and Gold have had a star of the week in all three weeks they've competed in this season, earning a total of four honors as Rinzel and Lamb (Oct. 29) joined Jimmy Clark (Oct. 22) and Connor Kurth (Oct. 15).
