Weimer named Athlete of the Week while Schmitz was named the Freshman of the Week.
MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Ali Weimer has been named the Big Ten's Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced Wednesday. Additionally Isabelle Schmitz earned the distinction of Big Ten Freshman of the Week as well.
Weimer, a Saint Michael, Minn., native, was ninth overall at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Oct. 4. Weimer was the first Big Ten runner to cross the line at the event in a time of 19:46.8. Weimer's swift 6K time catapulted her to the No. 2 spot all-time at Minnesota at the 6K distance and was the fastest since 2021. Weimer's time slotted her ahead of Megan Hasz (19:48.9, 2021) and just behind Bethany Hasz (19:36.4, 2021).
Schmitz, a Hutchinson, Minn., native, finished sixth among the Gophers lineup at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, a meet in which the Gophers finished third overall as a team and ahead of No. 29 Texas and No. 10 Wisconsin. In just her second race of the season she was the highest placing Big Ten freshman at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational where she posted a lifetime best time of 20:47.2 to finish 50th overall.
For Weimer the honor is her second weekly award this season from the Big Ten while for Schmitz it is her first. The sweep of the two cross country women's weekly awards is the first in conference history after the Big Ten added the Big Ten Freshman of the Week to the awards schedule prior to the 2024 season.
