The Gophers drop their fourth loss of the season
ST. PAUL, MINN. - In a battle until the final two minutes, the seventh seeded University of Minnesota soccer team fell to No. 10 seeded Penn State on Friday evening, 1-0, at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Minnesota drops to 12-4-3 (6-3-2 B1G) while Penn State improves to 12-5-3 (5-4-2 B1G) and advances to the quarterfinal round to face No. 2 seeded UCLA on Monday
The Golden Gophers outshot the Nittany Lions 18-12 (8-5 S.O.G.). Freshman Caroline Birdsell led the way with five shots followed by sophomore Paige Kalal who had four. Goalkeeper Sarah Martin grabbed four saves on the evening.
Despite a scoreless first half, Minnesota led offensively with four shots on goal compared to Penn State's one. The Nittany Lions' only chance was stopped by Martin late in the first 45 minutes.
After an even second half, Penn State got on the board in the 88th minute. Mieke Schiemann scored off a set piece play. The goal was assisted by Olivia Damico and Jordan Fusco.
