Minnesota Dominates Singles to Finish CSUN Fall Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The University of Minnesota tennis team wrapped up its 2024 fall season Sunday, finishing with a 7-0 record in singles and a 2-2 record in doubles at the CSUN Fall Invitational.
The Golden Gophers went undefeated in singles against UTEP and CSUN, with wins from Mia Liepert, Anali Kocevar, Deniz Turan, Jeselle Ante, Sofia Pinto, Anlin Xie, and Nora Knezevic.
Minnesota's pair of Aiva Schmitz and Arina Valitova defeated CSUN's Sydney Wilson and Tallia Harper 6-3, while Liepert and Knezevic topped San Jose State's Duru Durgun and Soledad Fayos Capilla 6-2.

"This tournament definitely gave us valuable experience to close out the year," head coach Lois Arterberry said. "Everyone got the chance to play in multiple matches over the weekend, both in singles and doubles. It was challenging at first, as we had to adjust to playing outdoor tennis, which took some time for many of the girls. As the weekend went on, we were able to adapt our game and become more competitive on the outdoor surface. We finished on a high note today, and we're pleased with the progress from where we started. As we wrap up the year, we have the opportunity to focus on individual and small-group work, tailoring support for each athlete's technical needs. I'm happy with how we ended today—it's definitely something we can build on as we head into the spring season. We're in a tough conference, but we're hopeful that we can keep growing over the next few weeks."

Overall, the team finished 12-11 in singles and 8-4 in doubles over the weekend.
Minnesota student-athletes Anali Kocevar, Mia Liepert, Sofia Pinto, Jeselle Ante, and Aiva Schmitz each earned two singles wins for the Gophers.
Schmitz and Knezevic also contributed three doubles victories—two together, one with Knezevic partnering with Liepert, and one with Schmitz teaming up with Valitova.
Next Up
The Gopher tennis team will return in January for the 2025 spring season. A few Minnesota student-athletes may still qualify to compete in individual tournaments this fall.
