MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota wrestling program has stayed in-state with the addition of Evan McGuire on a scholarship agreement, head coach Brandon Eggum announced Thursday.
McGuire hails from Mahtomedi, Minn., and attends Mahtomedi High School. He has twice placed at the state championships, finishing as runner-up as a junior at 189 pounds after taking fourth as a sophomore at 182 pounds. He also qualified for state as a freshman while competing at 145 pounds. He entered this season with a career record of 121-28.
MatScouts rates McGuire as the No. 99 overall recruit in the class and No. 12 at 197 pounds.
"We're thrilled to have Evan join our program," Eggum said. "As a local talent with an impressive arc of development, he represents the grit and tradition that Minnesota wrestling is built on. We're excited to see him continue to grow and make his mark on Minnesota wrestling tradition."
On the international scene, McGuire was a member of the USA U17 Greco-Roman team that competed at the World Wrestling Championships this past August in Amman, Jordan. Unfortunately, McGuire was injured in his first match and had to medically forfeit out of the tournament.
Earlier in the summer, McGuire, who made the squad after winning his division at the USA Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas in April, took part in the Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was undefeated in Greco-Roman, winning three of his four matches by pin, and placed third in freestyle with a 2-1 record.
McGuire was a Fargo All-American this summer, placing fifth in freestyle. He also took eighth in freestyle at the US Championships with a 5-3 record.
